The Importance of F&I and Extended Warranty Today in Auto Dealerships

Warranties and Service Contracts Face a Strong Year as Dealers Recoup from Zero-Percent Financing "Some reports show that F&I contributed almost 40 percent of total dealership profits in 2003 and 2004." According to data from J.D. Power and Associates, the average auto dealer’s profit on service contracts in 2004 was $548 per unit, a 7-percent increase over 2003. Dealers who were in business at least 20 years ago know why F&I is so important. The same number of vehicles are being sold by more franchised dealers because automakers have kept their dealers from becoming too large in order to spread to more markets. "Gross profit per car has steadily dropped while dealership expenses have steadily increased," Steve Burgess of ACC Warranty said while attending the NADA Convention in Orlando. "Dealers have less finance reserves because of zero-percent financing and flat fees from lenders." That is why dealers must turn to alternative forms of revenue, Steve said. "It's difficult to survive in today’s market without a significant income from the F&I department," Burgess said. “That involves offering several F&I products to fit each customer and to maximize every opportunity for the dealership,” according to Burgess. Because of the complexity of vehicles today, Burgess said the value of service contracts to consumers continues to grow. And because of the importance of service contract profits to the dealership, currently as much as 20 percent of the average store’s profits and over 40 percent of the profits in best in class stores."
